Autism Consultant Services

Service Description and Purpose

The Autism Consultant provides assistance to the 33 LEAs in the Fresno County SELPA. This service offers support for students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) through consultation with staff, parents, and students in various areas related to autism, inclusion strategies, and positive behavior support. Information, modeling, and suggestions are provided to assist staff and families in developing effective and quality programming for students with ASD. In-service and training opportunities related to ASD are available throughout the school year. Assistance with assessment of students with or suspected of having ASD is available. The Autism Consultant may also act as a liaison between school and home, participate in coordination of placements, IEP meetings, and transition activities.

Eligibility

Any student who exhibits the characteristics set forth in the federal and state definition of educational autism may be referred for support from the Autism Consultant.

Referral Process for Specialist Support

Districts need to:

  1. Document need for SELPA Autism Consultant Services and include names of staff or IEP team members who were involved in making this referral.
  2. Complete a Release of information form.
  3. Complete the Referral for Autism Consultant Services.
  4. Include documents requested on referral form.
  5. Fax or email to the Autism Consultant or program secretary.
