2009-10 Visual and Performing Arts

In 2001, the State Department of Education put in place Content Standards in the Visual and Performing Arts (dance, music, theatre, and visual arts), kindergarten through twelfth grade.  They fall under the following categories at each grade level:

  • Artistic Perception:  Looking at and describing the art
  • Creative Expression: Doing or performing the art
  • Historical and Cultural Context:  Putting art in its place in history or in its culture
  • Aesthetic Valuing:  Making judgments and interpretations about art
  • Connections, Relationships, and Applications:  Fitting one art form into another, into other subject areas and into careers

The arts are considered one of the six core subjects by the State Department of Education and in the No Child Left Behind law.
