Fresno County Teaching American History Grant (TAH)

DESCRIPTION
The purpose of the Teaching American History Grant (TAH) is to promote the teaching of traditional American history in elementary and secondary schools. It will be used to improve the quality of American history instruction by supporting professional development for teachers. By improving teachers' knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of American history, and by integrating history throughout the K-12 curriculum, our ultimate goal is to raise student achievement.

A second goal of this tri-county TAH grant (Fresno, Tulare and Madera Counties) is to demonstrate how school districts and institutions with expertise in American history can collaborate over a three-year period to ensure that teachers develop the knowledge and skills necessary to teach traditional American history in an exciting and engaging way.

Through the various projects and activities provided within the grant, districts will demonstrate comprehensive professional development approaches for providing high-quality American history instruction and students will develop an appreciation for American history.

TAH GRANT EVENTS:

Colloquia & Workshops
Throughout each grant year, participants will attend nine days of content-rich colloquia.  Our goals embedded in the grant are to increase teacher content knowledge and to increase student knowledge.  Colloquia occur during the fall, winter and summer months.  Presentations are conducted by noted scholars in the field of history and history education.  Teachers will collaborate, investigate teaching strategies, and conduct historical research.

Our two-day spring workshop will enable teachers to get hands-on experience while working with our local and regional resources.  Teachers will become familiar with all that our region has to offer, ultimately helping our students better understand where they live.

Book Club
The purpose of our history book club is to help teachers become more familiar with our American history.  Participants will be reading a variety of content-rich books.  We plan to meet every few weeks in a variety of settings to conduct a salon (a meeting of intellectuals).  Plans include regular face-to-face meetings at various sites between our participants throughout the three counties.  Additional discussions will occur with CSUF professors who will help plan discussion topics and will oversee a few meetings related to the reading.  This will be scholarship at its finest!
