The Language Arts/Humanities Block offers Fresno County students
two exciting opportunities to demonstrate their talents in the English-Language
Arts.
Young Authors' Faire

The Young Authors’ Faire showcases original student writing in Fresno
County. Each participating school may submit 10 books written and illustrated by
students in grades K-6. These books will be
on display at the Fresno Historic Banker's Ballroom, Downtown, 1058 Fulton Mall., during the Young Authors Reception on May 13th. Middle School/Junior High students
are invited to submit group writing projects. These projects will also be
on display at the Fresno Historic Banker's Ballroom, Downtown, located adjacent to the Fresno County Office of Education.
YOUNG AUTHORS' RECEPTION
The Young Authors’ Reception, a celebration of academic and creative
achievement, honors participating students who have submitted their original writing
to the Young
Authors’ Faire. A published author will speak to the students “author to author.” Parents and
teachers of participating students are also invited to attend this celebration
of achievement scheduled for May , 2011 at the Fresno Historic Banker's Ballroom, Downtown. This year's author is Steven
Riley, writer and illustrator of Little Ty Cooney and the Big Yosemite
Race, and Little Ty Cooney and the Big Yellowstone Mystery . DATES

REGISTRATION
Intent To Participate must be completed online by
April 2nd deadline. Paper
submissions will not be accepted. Individual students cannot register for this
event independently. All registration will be done through school site or
district lead teachers.

The annual Fresno County Spell-Off competition will be held
March 31, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. Tentative plans are to hold the Spell-Off in Rooms
270, 274 & 201 at FCOE. The participants in the County Spell-Off are the
qualifying finalists of schools who held district-wide spelling bee
competitions. The top two winners in each division (elementary and junior high)
will represent Fresno County in the California State Spelling Championships.
Each participating district may send TWO
representatives in the elementary division (Grades 4-6) and TWO representatives in the
junior high division (Grades 7-8) to compete in the Fresno County Spell-Off,
(not two
finalists in each grade level). The elementary division is an oral competition, and the junior high division
is a written competition. Teachers, members of your staff, and the contestants’
families are welcome to attend the Spell-Off, although seating is limited.
There is an $80 registration fee per student to enter the County Spell-Off. The
winning schools will be responsible for the $475 registration fee for entry into the State Elementary Championship and/or
the $350 registration fee for the Junior High Championship. Student name
submissions are accepted online only. A link will be
emailed to you to submit your student names, after we have received your online
intent form.
