The Language Arts/Humanities Block offers Fresno County students two exciting opportunities to demonstrate their talents in the English-Language Arts.

Young Authors' Faire                                 Spell-Off

2009-10 Young Authors' Faire (YAF)

The Young Authors’ Faire showcases original student writing in Fresno County. Each participating school may submit 10 books written and illustrated by students in grades K-6.  These books will be on display in the 2nd floor Ballroom of the Holiday Inn Downtown, 1055 Van Ness Ave., during the Young Authors Reception on May 13th.  Middle School/Junior High students are invited to submit group writing projects.  These projects will also be on display at the Holiday Inn Downtown, located  adjacent to the Fresno County Office of Education.

YOUNG AUTHORS' RECEPTION
The Young Authors’ Reception, a celebration of academic and creative achievement, honors participating students who have submitted their original writing to the Young Authors’ Faire. A published author will speak to the students “author to author.”  Parents and teachers of participating students are also invited to attend this celebration of achievement scheduled for May 13, 2010 at the Holiday Inn Downtown.  This year's author is Steven Riley, writer and illustrator of Little Ty Cooney and the Big Yosemite Race, and Little Ty Cooney and the Big Yellowstone Mystery .

2009-10 Spell-Off

The Fresno County Office of Education hosts an annual County Spell-Off. The competition will be held March 24, 2010 at 9:00 AM at FCOE, Rooms 270, 274 & 201.  The Spell-Off is being conducted for the qualifying finalists of schools who held district-wide spelling bee competitions. The top two winners in each division (elementary and junior high) will represent Fresno County in the California State Spelling Championships.

Each participating district may send TWO representatives in the elementary division and TWO representatives in the junior high division to compete in the Fresno County Spell-Off, not two finalists in each grade level.  The elementary division, grades 4, 5, and 6, will be an oral competition, and the junior high division, grades 7 and 8, will be a written competition. Teachers, members of your staff, and the contestants’ families are welcome to attend the Spell-Off.

There is an $80 registration fee per student to enter the County Spell-Off. The winning schools will be responsible for the $450 registration fee for entry into the State Elementary Championship and/or the $350 registration fee for the Junior High Championship.  Student name submission will be online this year.  A link will be emailed to you to submit your student names, after we have received your online intent form.
