The State Curriculum & Instruction Steering Committee for Language Arts sponsors a number of events for the State of California that is executed by selected representatives from the 11 Regions in the State. Patty Lehman, English/Language Arts Coordinator for the Fresno County Office of Education is the Region VII Lead for Fresno, Tulare, Kings, Mariposa, Madera, and Merced counties. In the past the committee has provided the Early Assessment Program (EAP), the Secondary Reading Summit, the California Vocabulary Forum, and AB466 trainings. They helped develop the new Language Arts County Course of Study, “Creating a System-wide Literacy Plan for Student Success.”
This workshop is intended for English teachers as an introduction to the materials contained in the CSU 12th Grade Expository Reading and Writing Course. A workshop will be conducted at Tulare Joint Union High School District. Days 1, 2, and 3 are 6-hour days on May 7-8, September 17, 2009 and Day 4, a 2-hour after-school session, is November 5th. Madera workshop dates are June 15, 25, Nov. 23, 2009, and March 8, 2010. Fresno workshop dates are September 29-30, November 13, 2009 and March 4, 2010. Aligned with the English-Language Arts Content Standards, the course emphasizes the in-depth study of expository, analytical, and argumentative reading and writing. These rich, adaptable resources, developed by a collaborative group of CSU and high school faculty and specialists, are designed to help students develop the academic literacy skills necessary for success in college and the world of work. Schools may adopt the course as a senior English course or integrate course modules within existing English courses at the 11th and 12th grades. Teachers attending this workshop will receive:

Secondary
school leaders seeking to improve literacy among adolescents are encouraged to
attend the Secondary Reading Summit IX: Best Practices for School-Wide
Literacy: Systems and Strategies. DATE LOCATION Participants
will learn and reflect on how California schools address national and state
mandates for secondary student literacy. Keynote presenters, seminars, and
workshops will highlight best practices for benchmark, strategic and intensive
interventions, and will focus on closing the achievement gap for English
learners and special needs students. School panels will present sessions on
program improvement and academic achievement. Sessions will be offered for

The 4th Annual Region VII Literacy Conference will offer fresh ideas and straight-to-the-classroom strategies for listening, speaking, reading, and writing that can be applied to any content area. Cross-curricular topics may include vocabulary, comprehension, writing, critical thinking, and more. Join us to re-energize reading/language arts instruction and collaborate with peers from across the six-county region.
