The State Curriculum & Instruction Steering Committee for Language Arts sponsors a number of events for the State of California that is executed by selected representatives from the 11 Regions in the State. Patty Lehman, English/Language Arts Coordinator for the Fresno County Office of Education is the Region VII Lead for Fresno, Tulare, Kings, Mariposa, Madera, and Merced counties. In the past the committee has provided the Early Assessment Program (EAP), the Secondary Reading Summit, the California Vocabulary Forum, and AB466 trainings. They helped develop the new Language Arts County Course of Study, “Creating a System-wide Literacy Plan for Student Success.”
This workshop is intended for English teachers as an introduction to the materials contained in the CSU 12th Grade Expository Reading and Writing Course. The first two days of the workshop will be conducted at Fresno COE October 2-3, 2008; the last two days will be conducted at CSUF. Day 3 is January 29th, and Day 4, a 2-hour after-school session, is March 19th. Aligned with the English-Language Arts Content Standards, the course emphasizes the in-depth study of expository, analytical, and argumentative reading and writing. These rich, adaptable resources, developed by a collaborative group of CSU and high school faculty and specialists, are designed to help students develop the academic literacy skills necessary for success in college and the world of work. Schools may adopt the course as a senior English course or integrate course modules within existing English courses at the 11th and 12th grades. Teachers attending this workshop will receive:
